Reading Recommendations

No, I'm not giving a list of recommendations. I need them.

I have just finished a wonderful book, the latest in the Armistead Maupin 'Tales of the City' series. This is a series that I started reading when I lived in the Goldfields of Western Australia nearly 20 years ago. (Okay, I highly recommend these books, but that is it from me.) Now I need something else to get stuck into.

I have wandered into this and this English language bookshop in Berlin and haven't been able to make a choice. I'm not sure if there is too much choice or not enough. (Both of these shops will buy the books back when you have finished which I just love.)

My request to you is to head me in the direction of some great reading. Fiction or non-fiction, I don't mind. I just need a little direction when I head back to the bookshop.

Take care

  1. My all time favourite novel is "The Thirteenth Tale" by Diane Setterfield- it is basically a modern gothic novel and it is truly the best writing I have come across. It is a book written for book lovers, so you should enjoy it immensely!

  2. Thanks so much, Brenna. This is a great start to my list. I will feel so much better going in there with something in mind. I look forward to having a look for it. : )

  3. If you enjoyed Pride and Prejudice then you might like Colleen McCullough's latest novel. The Independence of Miss Mary Bennet which is about the ongoing lives of the Bennet sisters, and a sparkling romance that shows it is never too late to find love.
A series that's been around for awhile is the Earth's Children starting with The Clan of the Cave Bear about pre-historic days, it's non-fiction but is well researched and about survival in a hard world with a bit of a love twist. I could go on and on, I love books. Um will be looking into The Thirteenth Tale as well. TFS and letting me visit.

  4. The Book Thief is my favourite read this year."The best word shakers were the ones who understand the true power of words. They were the ones who could climb the highest. One such word shaker was a small, skinny girl. She was renowned as the best word shaker of her region because she knew how powerless a person could be without words." pg. 446

  5. I want to read that last one - my interest is peeked - The Book Thief. Kirsty - who is the author please? I can't recommend to much to you Bruise Mouse as I tend to read non fiction. But here is one that I read years ago and have never forgotten and think is absolutely brilliant - The Talisman by Peter Straub and Stephen King. I am not into horror so it does not fit that catergory but I would call it fantasy. Brilliant book and you will see Twinners afterwards every where - LOL

  6. Chris, Kirsty and Wendy, thanks so much for all of your suggestions. These will be very helpful for my next trip to the book shop.

Wendy, non-fiction suggestions are very welcome also. Have you read Ethical Eating by Angela Crocombe? It is a bit like Food Inc but Australian.

  9. Loved Animal Vegetable Miracle! Yeah, get that one :-)
I can't remember, did you read The Millenium Series?- they rocked.
Light fiction, Tales of the Otori- loved that series.

  10. CHFG, Animal Vegetable MIracle is certainly one I will be getting. I didn't get into the Millennium Series as I kept getting too confused at the beginning. I was listening to it on audio book while I was out walking. I've seen the first two movies so I might need to give it another go.
Love a bit of light fiction.

  11. I have organised The Book Thief through the local library. Thanks Kirsty for the idea. No I have not read Ethical Eating - I will get it through the library and let you know what I think. I have a list of books on my blog that I have read and a little write up about each one or a link to a review from someone else. Take a look - it is on my book page. You might get ideas from there as well if you don't mind a non-fiction once in a while. Cheers, Wendy PS - I loved Animal, Vegetable, mineral - great book.

  12. Wendy, I hope you tell us about the book when you have read it.
I liked Ethical Eating as it related to Australia and Australian regulations. If you are interested in Australian food regulations, Additive Alert is also interesting.
Animal, Vegetable, Mineral is certainly a popular choice.
    Thanks

  13. Markus Zusak is the author of the Book Thief. If you want something to really plough into and like the intrigue of a family web, A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth is amazing, an all time favourite. So many good books out there, so little time. Pleased you could get a copy from the library - mine came from mum and has since been passed on to a happy recipient. Everyone I know who has read it loved it, hope you do to.
