Passionate About Passionfruit

A few years ago, before I was truly interested in growing my own food, I planted a passionfruit vine with the sole purpose being to cover over a fence.

The thought of passionfruit from my childhood always brings memories of a sponge cake covered in a crunchy passionfruit icing. I was always a little unsure about those little seeds. They seemed to look a little too much like insects that had found their way onto the cake.

This summer had been the first time my fence-covering vine has started to bare fruit, and it's got me excited.

Just for starters, to really savour the taste, I decided to go for the simple dish of passionfruit over homemade yoghurt. Such a simple and satisfying breakfast.

There are so many recipes for passonfruit that I am sure some of these will be made over the next few weeks.

As the weather at the moment does not really get me excited about baking (35 -39 all week), the flesh from the fruit is being scooped out and frozen in ice-cube trays ready to be popped out when needed.

It is great to know that these purple fruit are brimming with so many nutrients.

Do you have a favourite passonfruit recipe?

Take care

  1. I'm eying off my passionfruit vine too. Looks like plenty of fruit on it this year. I just need to figure out a way to save the fruit from some local animal that also likes passionfruit. I'm not sure maybe bats? I usually find the passionfruit littered on my lawn with a good scratch or two through it and a big chunk missing where they've had a taste of the fruit and then left the rest. The chooks are grateful for the leftovers!

    1. Pam, that must be so frustrating. I hope you manage to devise a plan to keep the critters away from the fruit, especially as they don't particularly like it.
Your chooks have fabulous taste. : )

    1. I was even thinking it would be pretty good with the yoghurt in a banana smoothie.

  3. I'm very jealous, after a few years we've had lots of flowers and never fruit. I tried painting them to help the pollination but it didn't work. I think I need to plant another one.

    1. It is pretty amazing to have any fruit on this at all. I was reminded today that this time last year the poor thing was on death's door. Now as I have been away for the last six months and come back to a thriving vine, I am starting to think I must have been doing something wrong.

  4. Passionfruit is lovely isn't it. I've been feeling like it the last few days, so now I'll definitely have to go find some. I used to love passionfruit on porridge as a kid...is that weird?

    1. CHFG, I am really enjoying these, especially knowing that they came from my garden. On porridge you say? Sounds like a mix of summer and winter all in one bowl. Great.

  5. I'm also jealous! I love them, but my vine died in the frost over winter, so I've given up until we move somewhere frost-free. I like to eat them on yoghurt, or just scoff them as they are.

    1. Liz, I am really enjoying these. I am thinking I might make some vanilla yoghurt next time to add just a little bit of sweetness (And probably add some to the next pav)
