A Day of Firsts

With the start of a new week came a few exciting first.

The tomato bushes have managed to keep fruiting through the cooler months, with the help of a homemade hothouse (more on that later), and I have been slowly watching these round bottomed babies turn from green to luscious red. With the need for a midmorning snack, and these looking too good to leave any longer, the idea of a simple morning tea of tomato on toast, with a pinch of salt and pepper, was enough to get these tastes buds excited.

Yes, it was amazing.

I always love trying a new recipe that will hopefully become a family favourite and extend my repertoire just a little further. After eating the most amazing Spanish Tortilla in Barcelona last year, in a tiny, no-frills cafe, I wanted to be able to recreate this delicacy at home. The kiddoes renamed it "Chip Pie". For a first attempt, the results were pretty pleasing, but I think I will still keep searching for another recipe. Any suggestions?

I honestly think it was even better the next day for lunch, but don't tell the others.

Another one to add to the list.

But the most exciting and wonderful first was that our girls are growing up.

We followed the delighted, and almost hysterical squeals of "Come quick!", out to the coop and found this tiny, precious egg sitting in the box.

After photos and excited phone calls to grandparents, it was decided to add the egg to the tortilla. It was a very good decision.

I hope you all had a fabulous start to the week.

Take care

    1. It was so excited. All of us, even the grownups, couldn't stop grinning. You would have thought we had laid it ourselves. That's how proud we were. Hilarious.

    1. It was such a buzz, Gav. We knew the girls were close as they were the right age, but still, when we found that first egg, it was such a surprise.

    1. It is so exciting. We have had one a day for about 5 days now and yesterday we had two. We have worked out which lady is the layer. It is actually the one that went missing a few weeks ago.

  5. Lucky for you to have tomatoes, when I left my home :( I had hundreds of tomato flowers on the vines, I'm guessing there are tomatoes everywhere now. $8.99 a kilo at the fruit market yesterday $8.99!! I couldn't bear it, I bought two... do you think that will feed my family?
And don't get me started about eggs, I have to buy eggs again now too... :( You must be all very excited about your first, it's all good news from here now, you'll have fresh eggs everyday. Lucky ducks...Enjoy!

    1. It is great having the plants doing so well. Tomatoes are ridiculously expensive here too.
We are loving the fresh eggs too. The mystery layer has even been discovered so we are pretty happy about that.

  6. The tomato secret??? Tell me how you did that. All my compost surprise plants have fruited but nothing is red. I tried a brown bag and a banana and only one ripened.

    1. We used plastic to warm the little tomato-lings up . They seemed to like it. Keep an eye out for the next post.
